Summary: Jasper is studying to be an IT tech, and is working his way through college as a barista. He makes a mean cup of coffee, and has a flair for coffee art. But is his latte the only thing that keeps a certain customer coming back day after day?
This one shot is a Jasper/Edward slash paring. It reads in a series of scenes so to speak. Each section has a prompt that naelany was given by her beta. I loved the way the prompts were worked into the story. Some sections found the word used directly and others were implied. While each section is quite short, I found every word had purpose and meaning; no filler going on for the sake of increasing word count. Now that I think about it, naelany probably did it on purpose so as not to give too much away until the time was right...sneaky.
Here are just a few of the twenty prompts: Pound, Blue, Welcome, Distress, Strong. I’m sure you can imagine how any of these might be used. And no, pound was not part of a lemon.
Jasper is endearing in his self-conscious awkwardness and Edward is determined to assure Jasper of his equalled attraction.
He grins, answering my unspoken question. "I've been wanting to do that for a long time now."
I blink. "Really?"
"Yes, really," he says with conviction.
I like reading a character that shows occasional vulnerability and this one has it in the form of a blushing Jasper. I’m usually a pretty good judge at what’s going on in a story when it isn’t exactly being spelled out for the reader or the character whose perspective the story is told in. But I couldn’t seem to get a read on Edward, a pleasant surprise for sure!
Normally I find myself balking at unnecessary angst or scenarios that have the characters particularly dense to their surroundings. You wont find either of those things, quite the opposite in fact. I found myself silently cheering Jasper on and wishing I could hold his hand and tell him everything would be just fine when he was second guessing himself.
I nod, wondering why the hell I'd admitted to that. Curiosity had gotten the best of me, wanting to know if I'd read his work. When I saw it was his birthday today, I was ecstatic.
Now, I wish I'd left well enough alone.
Now that I’ve got you curious enough, go read to see just what I’m talking about. You won’t be disappointed. Do me a favour and leave naelany a review and while you’re at it, I challenge you to single out your favourite prompt/scene and tell her why. Just in case you were wondering, mine was Pound because it had that adorable blushing Jasper I’m so fond of.
Next week’s rec will be a Multi-Chapter story. Think you’ve got something extra special that I should read and talk about? Send me an email (c.thefaintheart@gmail.com) with a link and if I use it, I’ll be sure to give you all the credit for your find!
Thank you so much for this wonderful rec! I'm curious to see which prompts people pick as their favorite ;-)
You are very welcome? I'm curious too actually, I thought it was a fantastic way to write a one shot!
