Summary: A brief glimpse into a sizzling Texas romance, told from the eyes of a man in love with his girl. Just a bit off fluff and lemonade...soft and sweet with just a little bite. One-shot.
I was fic diving when I came across Brightness. I didn’t have any particular paring or genre planned for this week’s rec but after reading this one shot I knew I’d found one that needed some attention brought its way. As I write this, it only has 2 reviews...one of them belongs to me. Let’s see if I can convince you to do something about that.
So, just as the summary tells us, Brightness is definitely fluffy. I had this warm and fuzzy feeling the entire time I was reading it, right from the first line.

It’s hot, because it’s Texas and it’s always fucking hot, but we’re outside anyway, because I’ll go anywhere as long as she’s there.
Cue my dreamy sigh. I should probably mention this is a J/B pairing and it’s told from Jasper’s perspective. I always enjoy reading male perspectives. Mostly because part of me wonders what actually goes on inside the male mind and also because I really want to believe what he thinks is true of actual guys.
The plot line is simple and works really well for a one shot. Bella and Jasper are hosting an evening BBQ where Peter, Charlotte, Emmett and Rosalie will be joining them. The group eats, then hangs out around a backyard fire where Jasper plays requested songs on the guitar. Hello, hand fantasies!
Hand imagery aside, what really sold me on this story is how devoted Jasper is to Bella. His thoughts are constantly swirling around her with reverence at how important she is to his existence.
Sometimes I feel like I take more than I give, but my girl is always quick to remind me otherwise. She makes me feel like fixing the damn truck is the most brilliant thing ever, and I love her for it.
This one shot is sweet and lovely without being annoying. I didn’t find myself rolling my eyes at any of the obvious cliches that are often found in fluffy pieces. It also helps that Jasper’s voice is consistent through the entire read and at times I remember thinking, “why can’t Mr FaintHeart say these things to me?” Then I remember Mr FaintHeart is a sarcastic bastard and the most I’ll get from him is confirmation of how awesome he is after I declare my love for him. Yeah. I’m sure you can see why I might be smitten with this Jasper. The romantic in me wanted to be Bella, even if only while I read.
I wish there were more Jaspers like this one in the fandom, I really do. Instead I’ll settle for keeping this one tucked away for when I need a reminder that it’s not a weakness to love someone with such intensity and still be in awe of them.
If you need a pick-me-up or just want to have a feel-good moment, be certain to read this one shot and make sure to show your appreciation in a review!
